Wie kent hun legende niet? Plutarchus schreef erover in zijn Parallelle Levens, Shakespeare maakte er een tragedie van en Mankiewicz een meesterlijke én peperdure Hollywood film met in de hoofdrollen Elizabeth Taylor en Richard Burton. Hoe vertel je het verhaal van Antonius en Cleopatra vandaag opnieuw als elk detail ervan al zo gekend is?
De Portugese schrijver en regisseur Tiago Rodrigues kiest niet voor de monumentaliteit van de legende maar gaat voor een verfijnd distillaat. Je vindt geen klassieke acteurs in zijn bewerking maar twee uitzonderlijk dansers, Sofia Dias en Vítor Roriz. Hun speelse danstaal verstrengelt zich op fascinerende wijze met zijn poëtische hertaling van de meest hopeloze onder de liefdestragedies.
• Tiago Rodrigues is directeur van het Teatro Nacional in Lissabon en was eerder te gast in het Kaaitheater met Yesterday’s Men (2008) en By Heart (2016). Hij was ook te zien in Nora (2013) van tg STAN. In april 2017 werkt hij opnieuw samen met tg STAN.
