Our Solo

How to Be Many on Earth?
24—25.01.2024

'About our solo' was the subject for the email violinist and composer Aisha Orasbayeva sent to choreographers Claire Croizé and Etienne Guilloteau. It was the beginning of a process that led to Our Solo. For the first time in a long time, Croizé dances alone on stage. Orazbayeva performs a wide repertoire from ancient to avant-garde and experimental music on violin and synthesiser. Lighting designer Hans Meijer creates new landscapes each time.

In Our Solo, Croizé and Guilloteau return to The Farewell, the solo they made in 2009 around Der Abschied, the final movement of Gustav Mahler's symphony Das Lied von der Erde. For Our Solo, the makers start from the question of what it would mean to make Das Lied von der Erde today, when our relationship with the earth is so filled with guilt and fear. Can we still achieve the romantic sense of peace and trust in nature?

Mahler's heavy music is omitted, but the poetic texts of Der Abschied form the basis of the movement material and are given new - lighter - music by Welsh violinist Angharad Davies, English composer Jack Sheen and Orasbayeva herself.
