Etcetera Het Theaterfestival
Kunst in de greep van uiterst rechts?
In Hungary, Italy, Slovakia, Serbia, Poland, Austria and the Netherlands, far-right parties are in power. Art, culture and media are often the first domains they appropriate to push their political agenda. The threat often begins insidiously – through bureaucratic pressure, censorship, budget cuts, political interference in programmes and boards – but the consequences are significant and difficult to reverse.
At a European level, various cultural organisations are advocating for a European Artistic Freedom Act to better protect artists against political interference. How should we as artists and cultural organisations position ourselves in the face of this shift to the right? Are the free, independent arts truly in danger? Which strategies work, which don’t?
Following a successful international edition at the Wiener Festwochen, Etcetera and Het Theaterfestival kick off the new theatre season in Brussels with this debate, and Etcetera presents the premiere of its latest issue on art and fascism. With a.o. Michael De Cock (director Théâtre de Liège, ex-KVS), Lara Staal (theatre maker and house artist at NTGent), tbc. Moderation: Ciska Hoet.
