Suite n° 4

theatre
music
#BigNames
#hightech
19—24.05.2020

Warning: this show has been cancelled to help contain the spread of the new coronavirus.

In the first part of Suite n° 4, recognizable and anonymous voices overlap as though they were coming from different acoustic spaces. In the second part, the voices are accompanied by eight musicians from Ictus. In constantly alternating constellations – switching between acoustic and electronic – they demonstrate their musical flexibility. In this final Suite, the Encyclopédie de la parole collective presents a performance about absence, like an opera without singers or a theatre without actors. Despite this physical absence, the characters are palpably present. Like ghosts, they return from distant places to make their voices heard. For 150 minutes, you hear a thousand concrete situations in more than 30 languages. Prepare for a mental trip that employs all the resources of the theatre. To what extent is our everyday reality interwoven with recent and age-old discourses?

• The Encyclopédie de la parole collective explores the spoken word in all its forms. Joris Lacoste also directed the first three Suites, which each brought recorded voices to life with great virtuosity. The three previous parts were likewise presented during the Kunstenfestivaldesarts. The Brussels music ensemble Ictus is a fixture in the Kaaitheater programme. Earlier this season, they presented the ‘breathing concert’ Pneuma here.
