19.06 – 27.06.2019

Take a journey through time in one evening. Bartók/Beethoven/Schönberg will take you on a journey through three of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s early works, which are each the choreographic response to historic compositions.
In Bartók’s string quartet Quartet n°4 (1986), De Keersmaeker first ventured into the field of contemporary classical music. With playful and combative accents, she distilled a dance from Bartok’s complex and layered rhythms and harmonies. In Die Grosse Fuge (1992), she set out to find a male vocabulary: the dancers challenge gravity, seeking to depict Beethoven’s ingenious counterpoint physically. The final piece, Verklärte Nacht (1995), presents a shamelessly romantic love story, in which the contrasting feelings of a man and a woman – ‘Ich trag ein Kind, und nit von Dir’ – are dissected and interpreted in an expressive duet/trio based on Schönberg's eponymous musical score.

Fase (1982) was Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s breakthrough performance. Set to four repetitive compositions by the American minimalist Steve Reich, Fase comprises three duets and a solo. The movements are executed so perfectly that they almost appear mechanical, but they are nevertheless strangely moving. For the first time in the work’s history, De Keersmaeker is passing it on to a new generation of dancers.

During her 1980 stay in New York, in which she first rehearsed her celebrated Violin Phase to the music of Steve Reich, the only other recording playing in Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s studio was the Brandenburg Concertos by Bach. After more than 35 years, she is pursuing her work with this music, joined by sixteen dancers from various Rosas generations and accompanied live by the Baroque ensemble B’Rock.
