Jonathan Burrows & Matteo Fargion - Body Not Fit for Purpose

Situated somewhere between dance, music and performance art, the work of Burrows and Fargion radiates delight even as it makes the audience think. Over the past twelve years the two artists have built a body of duets which mix the formality of classical music composition with an open and often anarchic approach to performance and audiences, bringing them a worldwide following. Body Not Fit For Purpose is their first overtly political work, commissioned by the 2014 Venice Biennale and taking as its starting point the uselessness of dancing to express anything of any real concern and at the same time the inherent, gloriously foolish radicality of the attempt.

‘To find similar comic turns with serious twists, look toward Chaplin, Beckett and Shakespeare…’ – Victor Swoboda, The Gazette (Montreal)

Manon de Boer & George Van Dam - sequenza

Artist Manon de Boer and violinist and composer George van Dam present a programme of live performances and films around four compositions for solo violin. The evening begins with a live performance by George van Dam of Sequenza VIII (1976) by Luciano Berio. Then there is a screening of Manon de Boer’s film Presto, Perfect Sound (2006), in which Van Dam plays Sonata for Solo Violin, Sz117 by Béla Bartók. After this film Van Dam plays the Ciaccona by J. S. Bach from Partita II. The evening draws to a close with the film sequenza (2014) by De Boer and Van Dam, based on Sequenza VIII by Luciano Berio. The film is a dialogue between the architecture of music and the imagery of film.
