VIDEO: Alicja Gescinksa

Socrates and the Benefits and Burdens of Doubt

Video
25.11.16

Born in communist Poland, fled to the west, was offered shelter at the Klein Kasteeltje in Brussels and now works at the University of Ghent. That’s Alicja Gescinska’s history in a nutshell. Her books De verovering van de vrijheid (‘The conquest of freedom’) (2011) and Een soort van liefde (‘A kind of love’) (2015) made a deep impression. In this lecture, she focuses on the negative perception of doubt. She argues for a reassessment of hesitation in these polarised times, for less forcefulness and for more Socratic doubt in public and political debate.
