One Alarm Many Voices
Globe Aroma is an open arts centre and workspace in the centre of Brussels that is open to all – irrespective of background, personal situation, or status. Newcomers are also very welcome to paint, compose, work in theatre, and meet local artists. It is a space where artistic practice, creative expression, and integration go hand in hand. A place where people tentatively familiarize themselves with their new surroundings and learn to trust their own talents.
On the evening of Friday 09/02, twenty officers of the federal police service raided Globe Aroma and arrested seven newcomer-artists. Two of them are now incarcerated in closed detention centres, four others have been ordered to leave Belgian soil. This disproportionate intervention occurred in the framework of Minister Jan Jambon’s Canal Plan, which aims to counteract the threat of terrorism and radicalization. Throughout 2017, comparable scenarios played out at numerous social, socio-cultural, youth, sports, and welfare organizations.
Where to go from here? On Saturday 17/02, we will make our voices heard.
Starting at 2 PM, you can join our ONE ALARM MANY VOICES action at the Akenkaai (next to the Kaaitheater). During an open mic session, you can express your feelings, thoughts, and testimony (anonymously or publically). A number of debating tables at Kanal will seek to offer clarity concerning these chilling events in the Canal Zone.
ONE ALARM MANY VOICES is an initiative of Globe Aroma, supported by Beursschouwburg, Bozar, Bronks, deBuren, Decoratelier, Kaaitheater, Kunstenfestivaldesarts, KVS, La Bellone, RAB/BKO and RITCS
