Pierre Audi locates Bach's St. John Passion in an austere set inspired by Wim Delvoye's images. The passion questions the opposing claims on the truth found in religions and the conflicts it causes. Iconoclast Delvoye looks right through these truths with X-ray eyes, reducing them to a meagre pile of mouse bones.

As an emancipated feminist and activist, she navigated effortlessly between East and West – always arriving at deep insights into the complex relationship between people, cultures and religions. The books Beyond the Veil and Islam and Democracy garnered her worldwide fame and both remain powerful reference works to this day.

Eric Sleichim takes a closer look at Russian Futurism. His partners in crime are the versatile singer Claron McFadden, cellist Jörg Brinkmann and turntable wizard Matthew Wright. Russian Futurism disconnects language from substantive meaning, accompanied by merry song, recitation and shouting. Experience a concert like an unstoppable factory happening!

A unique blues and country repertoire took shape in the southern United States at the end of the 1920s. Liesa Van der Aa and Tom Pauwels, the resident guitarist with Ictus, are together immersing themselves in roots music and coming up with a new sound of the Deep South, such as old blues numbers and songs of protest and exile. Christopher Trapani and Larry Polansky wrote the compositions, a warm tribute to folk music.

The pianist and conductor Alain Franco is once again performing the 96 short compositions which together form one of Bach’s chief works: Das wohltemperierte Klavier. Franco masterfully links together the separate parts, which he views as novellas and which each have their own character, dynamic and time.

...the missing link between Fausto Romitelli and Laurie Anderson

Ictus is presenting a full-length piece by the Austrian composer Eva Reiter. She based it on the unconventional sonnets of the American Ben Lerner, which offer you weird associative ideas, banal observations and ironic comments along the way. The world Reiter has created with them quite simply demands a new sort of virtuosity from the musicians.

Sophocles’ Antigone was the personification of resistance. For the first time in theatre history, a character breaks away from the group to claim a solo role opposite the orchestra. On this occasion it is Cecilia Lisa Eliceche who is taking the role. Full of confidence, she faces four musicians of Zwerm armed with electric guitars.

Choreographer Laurent Chétouane tackles an iconic work: Bach’s St John Passion. He is not interested in a perfect execution of the music and doesn’t allow his dancers to ‘portray’ the Passion. Will Bach still move you without the security of a set choreography, trained singers and only seven instruments? What happens when Bach’s music is desecrated?

Het Theaterfestival 2015 - On the stage stand four children, two adolescents, three dancers, a 92-year-old man and a musician. The interaction between the different ages makes for new movements. We find it logical that children imitate adults, but what happens when adults are in their turn influenced by the youngsters’ rhythm?

PERFORMATIK 2015 - In his new production Xavier Le Roy creates three situations that make the relationship between the audience and actors less straightforward. The three parts – a lecture, a performance and a concert – are controlled by the loss of a protagonist. The actors and spectators mourn together and this leads to inventions and strange situations…

PERFORMATIK 2015 DOUBLE BILL - Body Not Fit For Purpose is the first overtly political work of choreographer Jonathan Burrows and musician Matteo Fargion. Its starting point is the uselessness of dancing to express anything of any real concern and at the same time the inherent, gloriously foolish radicality of the attempt. With sequenza, artist Manon de Boer and violinist and composer George van Dam present a programme of live performances and films around four compositions for solo violin
