We live in an age in which human activity has a profound impact on our physical and ecological surroundings. How can we create stories, aesthetics, and spaces of experience to deal with this situation reflexively and critically? What role can the performing arts play in the debate on climate crisis? First intended as a performative conference, On Enclosed Spaces and the Great Outdoors - 4. Grounding has been reworked into a series of radio contributions that will be streamed in three parts from Kaaitheater.

Borrowing elements from role-playing and escape rooms, Job is an online game performance in which you are remotely commanding a live avatar. The performance unfolds as a puzzle-solving narrative, located in the storage and technical rooms of Kaaitheater. Job explores the possibility of an avatar to ‘prefer not to’ follow your commands, and addresses the difficulty artists face towards the demand for increasing production and efficiency.

A Series of More-Than-Human Encounters. We are inviting researchers, activists and artists in a three-day-programme to explore the meaning and potential of justice in a multi-species post-imperialist world. Should we confer fundamental rights to animals and natural formations – such as lakes, the seas, rainforests and the soil? How are the worldwide decolonial struggles related to the global and local struggles for the live, safety and autonomy of non-human animals?

For their 10th anniversary, De Wereld Morgen is inviting significant thinkers and writers to Kaaitheater to reflect on the revolts that set off a decade ago. There were the Arab uprisings, the Greek revolts, the Indignados, the Occupy movements, the Black Lives Matters movement, and the indigenous struggles from Canada to Chile. These and other struggles captured imaginations worldwide, but were gradually overshadowed by state and global powers’ violent responses. High time to look back, ánd forward.

How will we live together? And who is we? Debra Solomon is an artist, PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam in the departments of Urban Planning and Designing Urban Experience, and co-contributor to the Dutch pavilion of the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennial. Her talk Multispecies Urbanism is the first in a series of more-than-human encounters, which runs this Kaaitheater season in collaboration with Crosstalks.

The Plant Readers workshop is no ordinary reading group. During these sessions, we will stage queer relationships between Plants and their human allies and recite spells together to develop new visions of the future. A series of texts will awaken your senses to create new forms of plant-human intimacies. All this in an attempt to move – as Natasha Myers calls it – from the Anthropocene to the Plantropocene.
