Myriam Van Imschoot & HYOID

newpolyphonies

performance music

newpolyphonies
newpolyphonies
Sat 03.07 - Sun 04.07.21

Inspired by insects, climate marches and airplane traffic coming to a halt, the leitmotif in this concert/performance is not the loud collective chant, but the experience that each individual – like a link in a chain – can set a vortex of sounds in motion. In newpolyphonies, four singers of HYOID join forces with 15 performers in a curious high mass about little differences with big impact.

Moby Dick

Moby Dick
Moby Dick
Wed 16.06.21

For this adaptation of Moby Dick, Gorges Ocloo called on Ben Okri, who adapted the novel into a magic-realist story about the gulf between high and low, rich and poor. Josse De Pauw and the mezzo-soprano Nobulumko Mngxekeza-Nziramasanga take to the stage. Together, they perform an energized and jazzy opera about the need for rapprochement in an increasingly polarized society.

Michiel Vandevelde & Platform-K

The Goldberg Variations
Wed 09.06 - Thu 10.06.21

In The Goldberg Variations, dancers Oskar Stalpaert (Platform-K), Michiel Vandevelde, and Audrey Merilus get to work with Bach's compositions and Steve Paxton's choreography. They take a close look at forty years of development of all kinds of dance practices. How open, democratic and accessible is dance today? Which body images do we prefer, which do we prefer not to see? The music is performed live by accordionist Vincent van Amsterdam.

Suite n°4
Fri 28.05 - Sun 30.05.21

After Suites no1, 2 and 3, Encyclopédie de la parole returns with the final part of their highly acclaimed series. In this Suite, the collective presents a performance about absence, like an opera without singers or a theatre without actors. Get ready for an installation that makes use of all Kaaitheater’s resources; a sonic and visual journey where the voices are accompanied by the music composition of Brussels ensemble Ictus.

After The Six Brandenburg Concerto, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker continues her journey with Bach in dialogue with these variations. Along with pianist Pavel Kolesnikov she brings The Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, a solo performance danced by De Keersmaeker herself. Here too, the musical score forms a blueprint for the choreography.

CANCELLED: Simon, Garfunkel, My Sister and Me
Sat 28.11 - Sun 29.11.20

Please note: this show has been cancelled to help contain the spread of the new coronavirus.

In 1981, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel performed their legendary charity concert in Central Park, New York: a musical feast of friendship and solidarity. the two singers now avoid one another as much as possible. More even: they had already split at the time of that concert. Simon, Garfunkel, My Sister and Me is the ultimate re-enactment of the concert, a show about rivalry in all its forms.

What might the musical heritage of polyphony mean today? Myriam Van Imschoot was inspired by insects, climate marches and the recent protests against budget cuts in the arts and civil society. A group of Brussels-based singers takes to the stage with the vocal ensemble HYOID. United, they move through mass singing, often on the edge of audibility.

SAFE
Sat 26.09 - Sat 26.09.20

SAFE premiered in the Kaaistudios in 2018, long before the corona-crisis. Today, Julie Pfleiderer’s performance feels strangely consistent with our lives. The current pandemic is causing waves of bacillophobia and fear of infection in our society. Based on Todd Haynes’ film Safe (1995) – in which a woman suffers increasingly intense allergic reactions – Ictus and Julie Pfleiderer sketch a picture of contemporary hypersensitivity. Join an immersive journey that will stimulate all your senses!
