What is the relationship between movement and typography, between dance and letter images? In her new performance Letters 2 Dance, Femke Gyselinck and two performers create a dance alphabet that it is for you, the audience, to decipher. They are on stage together with the eclectic musician-composer Liesa Van der Aa: together they arrange letters using musical samples.

Thu 23.06 - Sun 26.06.22

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker continues her choreographic journey with the fifteen virtuoso Mystery Sonatas, the best-known compositions by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber. These intrinsically religious and narrative sonatas are also a warm invitation to dance, thanks to the musical dance forms such as Gigues, Allemandes and Courantes. De Keersmaeker immersed herself in the mystical and geometrical wealth of this music and made the Sonatas her own in a choreography for six dancers.

Thu 03.03 - Fri 04.03.22

How do you translate the intensity, complexity and physicality of a piece of music into dance? For her new creation Duet for Two String Trios, Claire Croizé teams up with the Goeyvaerts String Trio, looking for answers to these questions through two string trios by the contemporary composer Charles Wuorinen. Dancers Emmi Väisänen and Jason Respilieux offer their bodies as a counterweight to this auditory onslaught. Music and dance circle each other in a play that is as dynamic and changeable as the string trios themselves: never a piece-by-piece translation, always a dialogue.

Wed 01.09 - Sat 18.09.21

The Goldberg Variations belong to Bach’s late period in which the composer pushed the possibilities of musical themes to the extreme in an interplay of variations, canons, and fugues. After The Six Brandenburg Concerto, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker continues her journey with Bach in dialogue with these variations. Along with pianists Pavel Kolesnikov and Alain Franco she brings The Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, a solo performance danced by herself. Here too, the musical score forms a blueprint for the choreography.

Sat 19.06 - Sun 20.06.21

La Chaleur starts from the longing to be one body, a choir of many. How can we be ourselves and the other at the same time? By connecting our voices and our breath, Madeleine Fournier suspects. In other words: by singing. On the basis of the iconic baroque music of Henry Purcell and the figures of the Muses, Fournier creates a unique form between opera and experimental dance. Spectacular and yet intimate, this performance celebrates the cycle of life and death, of bodies that cross each other, of people that pass on warmth.

They take a close look at forty years of development of all kinds of dance practices. How open, democratic and accessible is dance today? Which body images do we prefer, which do we prefer not to see? The music is performed live by accordionist Vincent van Amsterdam.

In 2016, Rain was reprised with a new cast, premièring at the Royal Circus.

The programme features a combative choreography set to the layered rhythms and harmonies of Bartók’s Quartet n°4, a group piece that defies gravity and depicts the ingenious counterpoint in Beethoven’s Die Grosse Fuge, and a shamelessly romantic duet set to Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht. Ictus and the Brussels Philharmonic will accompany the pieces live especially for the Brussels series.
