1974, Zaire. In the Fight of the Century, Muhammad Ali defeated George Foreman. Mobutu Sese Seko founded the National Ballet of Zaire. Fast forward to 2019. Faustin Linyekula has created a production in which he reflects on key moments in the history of theatre. Along with three members of the Congolese National Ballet and actors Papy Maurice Mbwiti and Oscar van Rompay, he explores what the young Congolese state could have become.

Fri 01.03 - Sat 02.03.19

Unfortunately, we have to cancel all shows due to the refusal of visas for the Congolese actors/dancers.

What is theatre? What do emotions and history signify on the stage? Faustin Linyekula shows his personal perspective on the history of dance and theatre in Africa. To what extent does the past define the present and even the future? Accompanied by music by Ray Lema, he challenges the basic techniques of “real theatre”.

Together with dancers from the EnKnapGroup, Pavol Liska and Kelly Copper have created a bizarre, painful and hilarious horror comedy about voracious expansion in the Wild West and all the violence that ensued as a result.

Spectacular dance scenes are alternated wondrously with intimate and moving images.

In From B to B the Brussels-Swiss choreographer Thomas Hauert and the Catalan choreographer Àngels Margarit work together. From B to B evokes a trip from Brussels to Barcelona, but the main theme of From B to B is probably communication: the desire to understand the other and the impossibility of this. The result is a playful and amusing dance theatre performance!

In their double one-woman show Eleanor Bauer and Heather Lang create an amalgam of theatre genres and familiar characters, nothing is too outrageous for them: a drag show, a spiritual talk show, television commercials... Amidst all this madness they turn their guns on such major concepts as cultural identity, capitalism and creative expression and apply them to the theme of ‘gender’ and the emancipation of the performer.

Travelling between the West African metropolis Abidjan and the European

looking for a mutually inspiring intercultural exchange. Rather, the
differences and contradictions between whites and blacks are the driving
force behind their idiosyncratic performances. Together with their
performers they create theatre to the irresistible rhythm of the
heartbeat of the Abidjan club and performance scene. Every night at the
Kaaistudio’s will be an all-round happening with at least two
performances, dance, theatre, lifestyle, music and partying!

Nachtevening is the second part of Inne Goris’ diptych centred on the stage classic Medea. A pared-down, sensory performance where the words by Inne Goris and Pieter De Buysser and the music by Eavesdropper are well matched. Two people enter the arena, driven on by a live eight-member chorus that now and then forces them to stop and reflect in this emotion-filled arena.

Thu 22.10 - Sat 24.10.09

In her new choreography Do Animals Cry, Meg Stuart and her dancers explore the cultural militia called family. On stage, we see a number of characters in slippers and pyjamas: a family – is it a family? – that calmly becomes disagreeable. They muddle about in various poses: father, mother or child. No one needs a fixed role: without being asked, each of them glides in and out of family portraits.
'The humour of Do Animals Cry is so refined it would soothe anyone's pain. It is Stuart's most intimate and emotional piece so far. ... A razor-sharp comedy.' (Ballet-Tanz, October 2009)

In performances such as Just Before, I said I, Quartett and In Real Time, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and her sister Jolente (of Tg Stan) examine the relationship between language and movement. This also applies to Kassandra - speaking in twelve voices, which is danced to an English script written by Oscar van Woensel (see Dood Paard) for the seven female and five male dancers in Rosas. This new version of Kassandra comprises more dance material than in the first performance.
