Over the last five years, Walter Verdin has been filming the traditional musical culture of Mozambique, which has been on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list since 2005. Timbila Tracks is a patchwork of this music and of new compositions based on Verdin’s video recordings. The concert includes a live performance by Matchume Zango, a young Chopi timbila player and percussionist.

KUNSTENFESTIVALDESARTS 010 - Video director Sarah Vanagt has chosen her own street, the Boulevard d’Ypres, as both the setting and theme of her latest project. Urban development and gentrification threaten this ‘Mediterranean’ area. So in order to memorialize her street, Vanagt went out to meet shop owners and anyone else she came across, assembling their stories to create a fairy tale.

Decorte had earlier adapted Euripides to make «Betonliebe + Fleischkrieg» Medeia and now he is working on The Bacchae. What interests Decorte is the element of extreme horror in the story and the contrast between the reason of Pentheus, king of Thebes, and the passion in the character of Dionysus, god of ecstasy, wine and theatre.

KUNSTENFESTIVALDESARTS 010 - After a number of small-scale side projects, Tim Etchells has rejoined his collective for an impressive new project with several new performers. Inspired by several recent collaborations, Forced Entertainment will focus on elements which it had ignored in recent years, such as movement, dance and the electronic manipulation of sound and voice.  Not to be missed!

Wittgenstein Incorporated is a re-construction of three lectures the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein gave in Cambridge before the Second World War for a select audience of colleagues and close friends. Wittgenstein paced up and down the room while philosophising out loud and in impromptu fashion – while allowing others to witness it. Rerun of the legendary Kaaitheater production made 20 years ago.

With Marzipan or Plexi Marijs Boulogne has created a production that combines the narrative character of a fairy tale with a musical (text, music, dance) and the intractability of a performance. A fairy tale about ‘hunger’: desire, (female) ecstasy, symbiosis and sexuality.

Following the success of Roman Tragedies and Angels in America, Kaaitheater is once again presenting a theatre marathon by Toneelgroep Amsterdam. The director Ivo van Hove mobi-lises the whole ensemble to tackle a light-hearted comedy of manners by the 18th-century Ital-ian playwright Carlo Goldoni. Summer Trilogy focuses on the materialist excesses and amo-rous intrigues of an upper middle-class family.

Six hard-rockers have broken down in their old Citroën and are stranded in a snow-covered landscape. The French artist and stage designer Philippe Quesne shows a slice of life, detailed and humorous. His sources of inspiration are Beckett, Maeterlinck, Goya, Dürer, and hard rock and mediaeval music too. A masterpiece!

More than a hundred years ago, Thomas Mann wrote The Magic Mountain, a monument of world literature. At the start of the 21st century, six actors ask themselves how they should approach this book / a book. An unusually interesting – and very amusing – performance about the problematic way in which 21st century man deals with his cultural heritage, as well as being a performance about acting and the acting pleasure experienced by six 21st century actors.

Fri 26.02 - Sat 27.02.10

For our younger readers, in the early eighties Maatschappij Discordia was the figurehead of a new sort of theatre that tackled the classic repertoire in a fresh and uninhibited way. It laid the ground for tg STAN, Dood Paard and many other small and independent collectives that followed them. In recent years Discordia has faded slightly into the background (and out of the subsidy lists), but now they are back with new work! So make sure you come and see it!

Thu 21.01 - Fri 22.01.10

In Springville we witness the constant metamorphosis of a small world. Characters, half human, half object, attempt to function with and in the proximity of one another. They play a moving game of chaos, expectation and surprise. Scenography, costumes, props and characters are closely interwoven and merge together. The image prevails. A performance with references to slapstick.

Under the title Big Heap / Mountain, Miet Warlop creates a number of ‘propositions’ regarding what can and cannot be perceived. Kris Verdonck quite often combines his fascination with machines with images and concepts that owe a lot to science fiction. This certainly applies to the three-part Actor #1, a performance about evolving: about what has come into being, what is, and what may come into being. Three variations on the metamorphosis from chaos to order. The three parts of the performance are shown in separate rooms at the Kaaistudios, and a guide takes you from one to the other.

Wed 09.12 - Thu 10.12.09

To round off an extremely successful tour, Jan Fabre’s latest stage production will be on for two nights in Brussels. Orgy of Tolerance shows the decline of the human species. Fabre grotesquely paints a portrait of the human consumer in our late-capitalist society, where everything is tolerated and everything is for sale. Jan Fabre meets Monty Python: hilariously absurd sketches expose the mechanisms of our collective delusion and undermine them with plenty of humour.
