Big Heap / Mountain: propositions

performance film

Big Heap / Mountain: propositions
Big Heap / Mountain: propositions
Wed 20.01 - Wed 20.01.10

Under the title Big Heap / Mountain, Miet Warlop creates a number of ‘propositions’ regarding what can and cannot be perceived. For each of these propositions, she looks for one or more partners in crime. She explores the boundaries of our imagination with a small arsenal of everyday objects and shows us how much fantasy we put into our struggles with reality.

Episode III - Enjoy Poverty

Episode III - Enjoy Poverty
Episode III - Enjoy Poverty
Sun 30.08 - Mon 31.08.09

Het Theaterfestival '09 - Armed with a camera, Renzo Martens undertook a journey for years on end through the Congo. He examined Africa’s most lucrative manufacture of export: filmed poverty. As with gold or cacao, the locals barely get anything in return for this product. Therefore Martens launches a campaign deep in the jungle of Congo to teach the African people ‘to profit’ from their poverty. Enjoy Poverty is a combination of journalism, satire and an obstinate, critical look.

Telegrams from the Nose
Fri 03.04 - Sat 04.04.09

Russia in 1920: the artistic and social revolution are flourishing but the bewilderment is total when Stalin’s merciless trials start. The lyrics in this musical theatre show consist of a literal transcription of the final minutes in the trial of Fyodor Bukharin interwoven with extracts from the work of Daniil Harms, another victim of Stalin’s terror. William Kentridge is responsible for the animated film and the directing, and François Sarhan, whose fantastic L’Nfer was performed at the Kaaitheater earlier in the season, wrote the music.

Re-Writing the Future

performance conversation film

Re-Writing the Future
Re-Writing the Future
Sat 24.01.09

How can we work on scenarios for the future in such harsh times? Beyond dystopia, beyond the apocalypse! How can we work on the future the way we would really like to, as a community. What would the transition to a low-oil society look like? Sometimes utopian, sometimes real, but always full of imagination.

The Art of Waste

The Art of Waste
The Art of Waste
Fri 23.01.09

Waste and excess seem to be fundamental to modern man’s definition of himself. Can we turn our urge to waste in a more immaterial direction? And can art, as a form of symbolic waste, play a part in this?

Re-Routing Mobility

Re-Routing Mobility
Re-Routing Mobility
Thu 22.01.09

In the twentieth century, mobility became the symbol of freedom and progress. But at a time of greenhouse gases and peak oil, the symbolic value of mobility is being rapidly reversed. And a different, more distressing form of mobility is making its appearance: that of climate refugees.

Re-Imagining the Landscape

Re-Imagining the Landscape
Re-Imagining the Landscape
Wed 21.01.09

There is a long tradition of depicting the landscape in art history and philosophy. But how are we to relate to melting ice caps, felled forests and endangered animal species? Are we able to redefine our aesthetic and ethical position, taking modesty as a core value?

The Visitants
The Visitants
Sat 08.11 - Sun 16.11.08

WORKING TITLE FESTIVAL - In the past decades, a wave of "self development" theories and practices has invaded the planet. ‘The body is the physical aspect of the personality and movement is the personality made visible’, writes Mary Starks Whitehouse, who developed  the “Authentic Movement” practice in the fifties. In a humorous way, The Visitants invites spectators to witness the 'inner journey' of the performers, exposing  their intimate experience to the public’s gaze.
