Physical Interrogation Techniques + Death is certain
Wed 07.11 - Thu 08.11.07

The Swedish artist and composer Carl Michael von Hausswolff, who participated in Documenta in 1997, has written and staged a play about six ‘classic’ methods of torture that use water, light, sound, heat, etc. In Death is Certain, the Berlin performance artist Eva Meyer-Keller is a perfidious kitchen queen who puts vegetables to death. They are throttled, shot, drowned, poisoned and so on.

theatre

Müller / Traktor
Müller / Traktor
Wed 24.10 - Wed 31.10.07

Jan Decorte was one of the first theatre-makers in Flanders to work with the whimsical, poetical, seemingly untheatrical plays of Heiner Müller. Now, he would again like to confront the wildness and radicality of Müller’s work.

or else nobody will know
Fri 19.10 - Sat 20.10.07

In her solos dancer and choreographer Mette Edvardsen explores the impact of space on movement. This season she will be working with a group of dancers for the first time. Moreover, this time Edvardsen will focus on the passage of time, on repetition, duplication and superimposition.

The Ballad of Ricky and Ronny - a pop opera
Thu 11.10 - Sat 13.10.07

The Ballad of Ricky and Ronny – a pop opera by Maison Dahl Bonnema is rough and bold. Dark clouds of words by Anna Sophia Bonnema paint the odd cult world of Ricky and Ronny, set to music by Hans Petter Dahl. Existential pop is adapted to form a curious story of two people detached from the world.

Thu 04.10.07

Maybe one day we’ll build a ‘second auditorium’ in the Kaaitheater, in the building on Quai des Péniches. In any case, last season students from the master’s studio in architecture and (performing) arts at Ghent University did an exercise on the idea. A selection of their projects will be shown at the Kaaitheaterstudio’s.

TASSO REVISITED
TASSO REVISITED
Sat 29.09.07

To mark Kaaitheater’s thirtieth anniversary we are holding two colloquia: one on the historical concept of the ‘avant-garde’ and whether the term is still of any relevance (22/9) and one on the artist and his relationship with society (29/9). These two afternoon events comprise talks, statements and debates.

Lettere amorose
Fri 28.09.07

The theater of the German Raimund Hoghe is both intimate and universal. In Lettere amorose he works with authentic love letters, borrowed from other people’s lives, with his own body and with space. Classical and popular music stands side by side on the soundtrack. A high point in Hoghe’s work.

MAP ME

performance

MAP ME
MAP ME
Wed 26.09.07

The choreographer Charlotte Vanden Eynde intuitively combines dance, art and performance. In MAP ME she shares the stage with her partner in life, Kurt Vanden Driessche: in the course of this performance their two bodies are literally ‘mapped’. The body as a sculpture, a compact mass, an erotic force.

Sat 22.09.07

In recent years, Abattoir Fermé has become one of  Flanders’ leading companies. In Moe maar op en dolend the spectator is locked into a small anteroom of the subconscious where there is no logic and dreams turn into dark nightmares. De Morgen newspaper described it as ‘Twin Peaks served neat’.

I have no thoughts, and this is one of them
Thu 20.09.07

A wonderful debut by Tine Van Aerschot as a writer and director. A subtle and at times enchanting play whose staging is sober and compelling. De Morgen: ‘Claire Marshall plays a subtle game with the distance between herself and her character. This is acting of great subtlety. A moving portrait.’

Ivana Müller

Tue 18.09.07

A stream of images in becoming, always changing, depending on who is looking. Whilst continuously provoking shifts in perception and sense, the choreographer Ivana Müller creates a show that is disquieting, moving and yet genuinely funny. One of the very best of last season.

Fri 24.08 - Sun 26.08.07

Liga starts with video recordings from the moment immediately after the performance. Backstage, the actors talk enthusiastically about  the piece they have just performed and the tremendous rehearsal period that preceded it. Disappointments are professionally smoothed over and any setbacks denied.
