Living (try-out)
Wed 25.06.08

Since the opening performance at our Comedy Festival in 2004, Tristero has presented no less than five sold-out series of Abigail’s Party, a bittersweet comedy by the filmmaker and playwright Mike Leigh. This set – which is more like an installation in the style of Guillaume Bijl – is the starting point for Living. The characters in Abigail’s Party evolve in this very same space.

In 1924 Thomas Mann published his ‘great European novel’, The Magic Mountain. In June 2008 it will be 101 years ago that Mann sent his main character, Hans Castorpe, on a journey from Hamburg to Switzerland. Stan, Maatschappij Discordia, Cie. De Koe, Dood Paard and Willem de Wolf, the cream of our country’s theatre companies, celebrate this with a first episode of their adaptation of Mann’s ironic masterpiece.

PONI starts out from very concrete elements: a penalty kick in football, the shooter, the ball, the goalie and the net. They are also inspired by each other and the world around them as well as by science fiction, ritual and science.  They attack dance under the enigmatic title Pnlt + eay = Penalty. The production is set up on a budget of 0.0 euro. You will be watching a try-out.

Sun 08.06.08

Next season we shall be presenting a new work by the choreographer Jean-Luc Ducourt and the pianist Alain Franco called Works by 3/1, a choreographic composition for one female and three male dancers, and a piano. It was only a few years ago that Ducourt developed a language of movement based on classical ballet. This provides the basis for the new work too, which he conceived for three male dancers with one female dancer as a counterpoint.

Hiphop is alive and Zulu Nation is its prophet. For six years now this Belgian organisation has presented the Battle of the Year contest at, and in association with, the Kaaitheater. For the last two years Zulu Nation has also been responsible for the highly popular hiphop dance acts at our Long Night of Dance events.

KUNSTENFESTIVALDESARTS 08 - The performance is a radio show for soldiers at the front. Twelve contemporary pop songs are alternated with light comments in ‘chewing gum English’. Wölfl’s dancers move cautiously and cold-bloodedly, whether they are playing an electric guitar on tiptoes or elegantly draping a leg over a synthesiser.

Tue 27.05 - Sat 31.05.08

KUNSTENFESTIVALDESARTS 08 - Dance N° 1 is an exuberant duet by the choreographers Eszter Salamon, who has often appeared at the Kaaitheater and also at Kunstenfestivaldesarts 07, and Christine de Smedt (of Les Ballets C. de la B.). Together they composed an ingenious score that is performed several times and in which the body constantly transforms. The seriousness of the study is countered by a clever carousel of lighting, sound and costume changes that play a frivolous game with the viewer’s perceptions.

KUNSTENFESTIVALDESARTS 08 - Over the last ten years Thomas Hauert has, both at home and abroad, shown himself to be a choreographer with a voice of his own. His latest piece, Accords, is an abstract choreographic composition that one experiences like a piece of music. The dancers physically transpose, amplify or distort the dynamics, harmony, melody and counterpoint in their bodies.

PRODUCTION CANCELLED! The new production by the American choreographer Jennifer Lacey and the French artist Nadia Lauro has modest beginnings: a simple curiosity about the shared space between the soloist and the group. Charles Fourier, Anne Lee, the Marquis de Sade, Roland Barthes and others are astonished to find themselves sitting together around the same campfire.

Ars Musica - At the end of November La Monnaie, Bozar, the Kaaitheater and Ars Musica Winter presented Georges Aperghis’ Avis de Tempête, an event of the highest order. Gives you an appetite for more. Machinations, first performed in 2000, is pure Aperghis and is the liveliest and most moving piece he has ever written. Music, text, video and performers enter into an alchemical combination.

Two ‘little men’ on stage. They carry out movements, make sounds, speak and sing. Everything is done in a virtuoso rhythm, with exact timing, sometimes in unison, sometimes in two voices. Actually they are involved in a lively conversation with each other which is carried out in sounds and gestures. A choreographic, musical and poetic gem. Irresistibly comical!

The Nature Theater of Oklahoma – the name comes from the last chapter of Kafka’s novel America – is one of New York’s most talented theatre companies of the last few years. An epic in which there is room for false moustaches and pirate hats.

Two actors and two actresses are lying very comfortably in a kingsize bed. They muse at length on fundamental subjects such as politics and society, and love and relationships. It is a caustic and at times extremely funny tirade in which they drop their guard and expose themselves. Or is it the spectator who is exposed?
