Mourning, Commemoration & New Rituals
Wed 21.03.18

On 21/03, spring promises a new beginning, but also the anniversary of the attacks on Brussels. On the eve of the second anniversary of the Brussels bombings, we’re bringing together three experts on mourning. After Anders Breivik’s bloodbath in Norway, Jone Salomonsen founded a research group on new rituals as a reaction to attacks. Kristin Verellen – who lost her partner in the Brussels attacks – talks about her circle gatherings that aim to foster a culture of togetherness and dialogue. And architect Koen Van Synghel discusses (temporary) mourning monuments.

Is Brussels complex? Absolutely. Administratively, culturally, socially, economically, and demographically Brussels is anything but easy. But this complexity does not mean that you cannot understand or learn to understand Brussels. The sixth Night of Knowledge on Brussels will again explore this urban district and all its varied dimensions.

Emeritus Professor Gloria Wekker is coming to talk about the profound paradox of places like the Netherlands, Belgium, and other countries with a colonial past: the emotion and aggression that race incites among the white population, while at the same time, race and racism seem to be denied. She explains concepts like white innocence, cultural archive, and intersectional feminism with reference to telling current examples.

In the wake of #MeToo, Ilse Ghekiere published the article #Wetoo: What Dancers Talk About When They Talk About Sexism. Her research into sexism in the Belgian dance sector developed into the anti-sexism campaign ENGAGEMENT. This evening will feature several artist-activists who are coming to talk about the steps that have been taken and the artistic strategies to tackle the abuse of power, discrimination, and inappropriate behaviour.

Sat 10.02.18

We live in an age in which human activity has a profound impact on our physical and ecological surroundings. Nevertheless, these transformations often go unseen. How can we create stories, aesthetics, and spaces of experience to deal with this situation reflectively and critically? Looking for answers, David Weber-Krebs and Jeroen Peeters install a series of hybrid artistic and theoretical interventions in a performative setting.

Staged in many locations throughout the city, the Ramlila features gods, demons, royals, animals, and ordinary people. Richard Schechner – theatre director, professor at the Tisch School of the Arts, and founder of The Performance Group – has researched the event since the 1970s.
