Studio Cité orients, directs, diverts and distorts your view of the world. Step inside a driving mirror cart by yourself, form a dancing circle with your fellow audience members, or stand on the side-lines watching how people with periscopic masks try to find their way. Vandewalle organizes an artistic funfair that offers unexpected experiences on Brussels’ squares.
Anywhere Doors is an interactive installation that moves through the public space. Five doors on wheels traverse the urban landscape – and evoke question about territories and borders. Feel free to open the doors, to close them, to step through them… Anywhere Doors will begin its journey in front of the 5 Blocks, as an open invitation to the children in the neighbourhood. You can accompany it to the Kaaistudios, where you will be treated to hot chocolate, waffles, and all the activities at the Arts Day!
Benjamin Vandewalle and P.A.R.T.S. will literally bring together the capital’s lively and international dance scene. A group of duos dances along a fixed route and dialogue with one another, the architecture, the passers-by, and the urban context in Brussels! Will you follow in the dancers’ footsteps or will you go your own way?
PERFORMATIK 2015 - A poetic performance about the complex relationship between man and nature. And a meeting between the special language of movement of the Icelandic dancer Bára Sigfúsdóttir (P.A.R.T.S., 2011), the work of the French visual artist Noémie Goudal, who combines illusion, stage design and photography to create surreal landscapes, and the Icelandic musician Borko.
PERFORMATIK 2015 - For twelve days pianist and conductor Marino Formenti retreats into the Zsenne art lab. He lives and sleeps, eats and plays there the whole day, while music and silence alternate, and time and space flow into one.
PERFORMATIK 2015 - The CENTRALE presents an exhibition of the Spanish-Brussels artist Emilio López-Menchero, which includes a work by Esther Ferrer, a pioneer of performance art. Together they take the streets for the performance Se hace camino al andar. Emilio López-Menchero also presents his solo performance Claquettes.
PERFORMATIK 2015 - With their ritual, circular movements dancing dervishes (Sufi Muslims) attempt to reach a state of religious transcendence. For A Possibility of an Abstraction: Square Dance Germaine Kruip asked the dervishes to break through the circle and introduce square patterns into the dance ritual.
PERFORMATIK 2015 - The French artist Béatrice Balcou has been working on a series called Untitled Ceremonies since 2013. In response to our fast-paced world, the ceremonies introduce a muted spotlight on art. By slowly revealing, looking at and contextualising one single artwork, the artist invites us to take our time.
PERFORMATIK 2015 - Music studio Q-O2 presents three Japanese artists, all of whom work around and with (kinetic) objects and spatial observation. Three performances in which the little things take centre stage.
PERFORMATIK 2015 - Marthe Ramm Fortun selects several portraits from three Bozar exhibitions and invites you to reinterpret them in her conversation performances. She looks for people and paintings that transcend their time or medium to connect with our current time.
A circle of observation points is placed on the roof of a building overlooking the Brussels canal. Look through a telephoto lens and zoom in: the city, the performers in the distance, the spectators and passers-by become players in a game of creating distances and bridging them.
Arnold Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht (1899) is inspired by a poem by Richard Dehmel, about a woman who tells the man she loves she is pregnant by another man. In 1995 Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker created a group choreography based on Schönberg’s composition. She has now rewritten the piece as a duet. A shameless romantic love story in the dark light of a Verklärte Nacht (transfigured night).
Burning Ice - Following her splendid Animalia during Burning Ice #6, we are inviting the Brussels theatre-maker Isabelle Dumont once again, this time with her new production Hortus Minor. With words, music and a superb collection of 'rarities', she tells the story of our relationship with plants.
As part of her contribution to 'The Other Tradition' (WIELS), Pilvi Takala’s performance 'Bag
Lady' will take place in a shopping mall in the centre of
Brussels. The simple action of a neatly dressed woman carrying a lot of cash in a transparent plastic bag as she
walks through the mall was previously realized twice, most recently as
part of the 5th Berlin Biennial’s night program in 2008.
Dancing in the sand. That is Dansand! This dance festival offers a lot of great stuff on and adjacent to the beach at Ostend: dance solos, group choreographies, duets with live music, performances, improvisations, workshops, happenings, etc.
Even walking is a pure form of dance! Rosas organizes an extended flashmob, in which you walk from the gates of the Brussels pentagon to the Grand Place at a glacial pace. Participate in a workshop – headed by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker herself – which shifts gears into a real dance party.
