Dances of Death
Dances of Death
Sat 12.06 - Sun 13.06.21

In the 21st century, death is everywhere: new incurable diseases, rising suicide rates, the consequences of climate change. How do we relate to death? Dances of Death is a physically intense performance with seven dancers and one singer. Together they propose the physical potential of dancing as the path to redemption. How would a dance of death be danced today?

The Goldberg Variations
The Goldberg Variations
Wed 09.06 - Thu 10.06.21

In The Goldberg Variations, dancers Oskar Stalpaert (Platform-K), Michiel Vandevelde, and Audrey Merilus get to work with Bach's compositions and Steve Paxton's choreography. They take a close look at forty years of development of all kinds of dance practices. How open, democratic and accessible is dance today? Which body images do we prefer, which do we prefer not to see? The music is performed live by accordionist Vincent van Amsterdam.

Ayur is a dance solo, and the first part in a trilogy focusing on the semantics and mythologies of the Imazighen, the indigenous people of North Africa. Radouan Mriziga created this solo for Sondos Belhassen, who has been his dance teacher while he was living in Tunis. Performed in KANAL, with the nocturnal city behind a sheet of glass, Ayur carves out space for a new paradigm of reflections regarding the past – to arrive at a more inclusive future.

Every age has its wonders of the world: the impossible that people still manage to build – bigger and more impressive than anything we’d seen before. But how remarkable is the small body that invents and creates all these colossuses? In 7, Radouan Mriziga juxtaposes two benchmarks: the built environment, made to impress, and the ultimate wonder of the world: the human body itself.

The title The Goldberg Variations not only evokes the famous music of Bach, but also the iconic dance solo by Steve Paxton. Along with a dancer, a ballet dancer, and an accordionist, Michiel Vandevelde works with this material. Three bodies, each with very different potentialities, delve into dance history and question the potential of dance today.

‘Money rules the world,’ it is sometimes said. Is money responsible for what has happened in the world under its governance? Can we call it to account for the horrifying situations in which many people find themselves today? Christophe Meierhans invites you to join him in an exploration of what money is and does. Last season, he premiered Trials of Money. He is now presenting a revised solo version.

Radouan Mriziga finds inspiration in an old love: rap music. Along with seven young performers, he researched everything that makes rap unique: the rhythm, the flow, the statements and gestures, and its history from the grandmasters to Kendrick Lamar. They attempt to capture the essence of a style of music that transcends musical trends and survives across generations – and which constantly reinvents itself.

How can we say something about the future through the lens of the past? Michiel Vandevelde examines the recent history of western modern and contemporary dance, from Isadora Duncan to Anna Halprin. In five speculative acts about the past from the future, the present is inevitably reflected upon. This way, choreography becomes a form of science-fiction.

Tue 15.01 - Wed 16.01.19

Due to productional reasons, this performance is postponed.

The vocal ensemble HYOID and artist-in-residence at Kaaitheater Benjamin Vandewalle are adapting Indianerlieder (1972) by Karlheinz Stockhausen, an iconic but rarely performed work. They are creating a gesamtkunstwerk that aims to reveal the vitality and timelessness of Stockhausen’s music. They are abandoning the original scenography in order to place the audience at the very centre of the three-dimensional ritual.
