Mother tongue: what's in a name? The complexity of 'mother tongue' and multilingualism is the theme of the next evening in the series The Wonders of Multilingualism. Once again, the focus is on mutual discussion, fuelled by short interventions from Effi & Amir, Nisrine Mbarki and Sofie Verraest.

Last year Passa Porta and Kaaitheater organised an evening of discussions on 'multilingualism' with writer Sulaiman Addonia and theatre maker Ahilan Ratnamohan. For the remainder of this series, we will let the audience set the agenda. The initial question reads: What are the hot topics and opportunities around multilingualism that we should pay attention to right now? The evening will be moderated by an experienced facilitator of the Open Space conversation format, a proven method of giving all attendees the right to speak.

Tue 14.12.21

During this evening, we will explore how human personhood has been constructed, and how it can be decentered and made to expand into different ways of seeing and being. The rational, universal individual has violently suppressed mutable persons existing at the intersection of multiple beings, as well as collective and interspecies ways of building knowledge that persist in the sciences, though often unrecognized. Underneath the steamroller of modernity, we will discover many possibilities for a more convivial future.

The global Covid crisis brought healthcare into the spotlight. But care extends beyond the strictly medical: it includes everything we do to preserve and restore the world. Can care be a new starting point, based on connectedness and generosity? Can care, as an emancipatory principle, underpin politics and economics? Ecopolis 2021 makes room for these questions, and many more, during a day of lectures, conversations, workshops, literature and performance.

Tue 19.10.21

During this evening we will focus on tendrilesque writing. What happens to human speech if vines enter our flesh, roots crawl through our veins, and we turn into hybrid plant monsters? What happens if we let plants speak through us and what kind of new language, new bits of knowledge and new worlds can emerge from there? We will explore these topics while focusing on the status of women, and their relation to plants, as presented in works of fiction in which the distinction between women and plants becomes blurry.

In the film industry gender equality is far from achieved. For this evening, three women delve into their work. With their North African and Middle Eastern film excerpts, they will discuss gender stereotyping, cultural taboos and their own experience as a director or film programmer.

Since the financial crisis in 2008, housing is no longer a basic right, but an attractive investment or financial product used by (big) capital as a safe haven. This is a familiar scenario, also in Brussels. Who does the city really belong to? In this programme, together with Leilani Farha, Fredrik Gertten and Alice Romainville, we take a deeper look at the root causes of these urban problems and processes of change.
