Thu 24.06 - Sat 26.06.10

The choreographer Panaibra Gabriel and image-maker Walter Verdin hope to make GUESTS a comprehensible, even moving performance that does not get stuck in high-tech experiments and effects. The theme is communication. Can we communicate with others without losing our identity? It is preceded by a workshop in which guest dancers are selected. They are given the opportunity to personally test and manipulate the system.

Fri 14.05 - Sun 16.05.10

KUNSTENFESTIVALDESARTS 010 - On stage a stack of torn books, a screen spits out random images. What starts out as a discussion about pizzas can suddenly continue with a history lesson, switches from flamenco to post-punk, from reflections on love to comments on the relation between humiliation and the economy. The director Rodrigo García – last year at our Performatik festival – seems to ask: what are we to do, say what we think, withdraw, or take part? And what if our actions were in vain?

Sat 08.05 - Wed 12.05.10

KUNSTENFESTIVALDESARTS 010 - The starting point of ZERO is the body as tabula rasa: a body with no memory, no past, no future, which performs each movement as if for the first time; a tool with neither purpose nor function. ZERO explores the relation between memory and the body, its bearings and reflexes, with remarkable physical intelligence.

Fri 23.04 - Sat 24.04.10

In her previous pieces, Charlotte Vanden Eynde often used objects and video, coming close to the boundary of visual art. In I’m Sorry It’s (Not) A Story she gives shape to her associative visual idiom in pure movement and dance, and seeks out the ‘image’ and poetry of movement.

East African VJs translate foreign films into local languages, taking the liberty of entertaining their audience with their own interpretation of the films. Esther Mugambi acts as this sort of VJ, mediating the visual imagery and the subtext as it shifts about and adding her own commentary to splice reality and fiction.

(BIG GIRLS DO BIG THINGS) by the American dancer and choreographer Eleanor Bauer is a dance performance on grandeur and vulnerability, hubris and humility, about living large when less is more but more is also unmistakably more. Bauer invites you on a safari expedition into the depths of the surface-oriented world of the performer. Self-expression drops the self and expression takes over.

With Marzipan or Plexi Marijs Boulogne has created a production that combines the narrative character of a fairy tale with a musical (text, music, dance) and the intractability of a performance. A fairy tale about ‘hunger’: desire, (female) ecstasy, symbiosis and sexuality.

Tue 16.03.10

More and more people agree that when it comes to selection criteria in business, a lot still has to change before women truly have equal opportunities. The call for quotas seems to be getting louder all the time. But are quotas the right approach? And if so, what would a realistic percentage be? And should we introduce quotas for other minorities too?

Robert Steijn plays a woman who believes devoutly in everything she does. He becomes a Martha Graham and thereby reaps great success, until he goes out of fashion and takes to drink. He dies, but is reincarnated as a Trisha Brown, who takes a postmodern approach to seeking contact with a new audience. An absurdly comical musical on suffering, working hard and living as a diva.
