UNTIL OUR HEARTS STOP

UNTIL OUR HEARTS STOP
UNTIL OUR HEARTS STOP
Fri 13.01 - Sat 14.01.17

Six performers and three musicians meet one another in a nightclub. Or is it an arena? In this unreliable, underground refuge, we hear thumping basses and playful jazz. UNTIL OUR HEARTS STOP was one of the absolute highlights of last season, and more than deserved its nomination for the Theaterfestival 2016.

Sun 27.11.16

Four dancers become musicians onstage. They deftly – and with a great sense of humour – strip traditional Alpine music, group dances and rituals of their conventions and conservatism. After SunBengSitting, Simon Mayer is continuing his exploration of the nature of tradition.

Fri 07.10 - Sat 08.10.16

A group of twelve performers explores the mystery of pleasure. In a long, sensual movement bodies touch, test, and lose their borders. They vibrate, entering into contact and  composition with their environment, forming unexpected constellations. Mette Ingvartsen looks seven concepts of pleasure straight in the eye.

Cinemaximiliaan is a cinema for people on the move. The project started spontaneously in the refugee camp in the Maximilian Park, where daily film screenings provided a welcome distraction. The volunteers of Cinemaximiliaan have encountered dozens of newcomers with artistic talent. This evening features work by three of these people.

Sat 23.04.16

Burrows and Fargion offer a chance to see their 2014 Venice Biennale piece Body Not Fit For Purpose. It is an attempt to reconcile personal politics with the difficulty of saying anything of consequence in a dance performance, all the while revealing the strange permeability of dance to any message that it meets.

Thu 21.04 - Sat 23.04.16
Five artists from different disciplines take a central role in this imaginative, bizarre and intimate ritual. Together with five performers, they seek a shared energy in a whirlwind of music, light, images and movement. Starting out from sketches and impulses, a variety of scenes appear before your eyes. Enjoy the revival of one of Stuart's most lavish performances!

Tue 20.10 - Wed 21.10.15

The choreographer Eszter Salamon looks back over a century of warfare. Together with her six dancers Salamon moulds a striking ‘dance of death’, using tribal dances and folk dances. All of these originate in conflicts on all five continents. Masked figures fight the horror in vibrant rituals!

BACH / PASSION / JOHANNES
Fri 09.10 - Sat 10.10.15

Choreographer Laurent Chétouane tackles an iconic work: Bach’s St John Passion. He is not interested in a perfect execution of the music and doesn’t allow his dancers to ‘portray’ the Passion. Will Bach still move you without the security of a set choreography, trained singers and only seven instruments? What happens when Bach’s music is desecrated?

PERFORMATIK 2015 DOUBLE BILL - Body Not Fit For Purpose is the first overtly political work of choreographer Jonathan Burrows and musician Matteo Fargion. Its starting point is the uselessness of dancing to express anything of any real concern and at the same time the inherent, gloriously foolish radicality of the attempt. With sequenza, artist Manon de Boer and violinist and composer George van Dam present a programme of live performances and films around four compositions for solo violin

Fri 09.01 - Sat 10.01.15

Five performers travel through the history of the dance – and possibly into its future. Time and time again they enter an impressive new world. Their constant effort to stay upright reveals inherent vulnerability. In Built to Last Meg Stuart works for the first time with existing classical music.

Wed 12.11 - Sat 15.11.14

Choreographer Andros Zins-Browne and dancer Chrysa Parkinson reinterpret Swan Lake (Le Lac des Cygnes). The presence of the original narrative is no more than implicit. The end result is a holographic installation of a physical body that gradually disappears into its virtual double.

Departing from the sexual utopia particular to the counterculture of the 60's, Mette Ingvartsen looks closely at our contemporary bodies, searching for cracks to penetrate our understandings of sexuality today. With the solo 69 positions she starts a new cycle of work entitled The Red Pieces. The series is a contemporary reflection on sexual practices and society.

Dancers, actors, musicians, set, lighting and costume designers enter into dialogue with one another as equals. One powerful image succeeds another. In A Speculation the Turkish choreographer Begüm Erciyas wants to chart money and all its movements. How do you create a choreography for something that can always be exchanged for something else? How can you make something dance when it has no body? Can the dynamics of the market be shown on stage?

For his Sacré Sacre du Printemps, Laurent Chétouane has chosen one of the most influential works in the history of modern dance. Unlike Maurice Béjart and Pina Bausch, he shifts the topic of ritual spring sacrifice to a sacrifice of Le sacre du printemps itself. He asks himself why we as a community wish to assimilate the foreign.

Travelling between the West African metropolis Abidjan and the European
art and theatre scene, Monika Gintersdorfer and Knut Klassen are not
looking for a mutually inspiring intercultural exchange. Rather, the
differences and contradictions between whites and blacks are the driving
force behind their idiosyncratic performances. Together with their
performers they create theatre to the irresistible rhythm of the
heartbeat of the Abidjan club and performance scene. Every night at the
Kaaistudio’s will be an all-round happening with at least two
performances, dance, theatre, lifestyle, music and partying!

Thu 04.10 - Sat 06.10.12

The confrontation on stage of classical and contemporary music with five performers – dancers and actors – is the point of departure for Meg Stuart’s new performance Built to Last. The performers develop a relationship with the past and the longing for a better future. Music is not only one of the starting points, it also seizes the piece and gives breath to its performers.
