Fri 29.04 - Sat 30.04.22

Vera Tussing invites the string quartet Quatuor MP4 to join four dancers onstage for a playful encounter between movement and sound. The four musicians play passages from various quartets by Franz Schubert, Anton Dvorak and Florence Price as well as contemporary works by Georg Friedrich Haas and Caroline Shaw. At the point where the orbits of dance and music intersect, you are invited to enter the kaleidoscopic score. Lend a hand, or an arm!

Thu 20.01 - Fri 21.01.22

Can choreography be used to fill in the gaps in our historical memory? With Akal, Tamazight for Earth, Radouan Mriziga once again focuses on the knowledge of the Imazighen, the indigenous people of North Africa. In this solo, written for Dorothée Munyaneza, he creates an intimate mix of rituals, traditional dance, architecture, storytelling, song, poetry and rap. A fresh look at an oppressed past.

Fri 26.11 - Sun 28.11.21

Departing from the simple action of shirt pulling, common in football as a method of maintaining contact with an opponent, not letting an opponent get away and typically seen as an aggressive act, Ahilan Ratnamohan and a group of performers attempt to push this action to its limits, debunking its aggressive, competitive quality to arrive at something new. In doing so the jerseys begin to take on a new significance.

Wed 13.10 - Fri 15.10.21

In The Dancing Public, Mette Ingvartsen explores ecstatic movement at social gatherings in the aftermath of a pandemic. Her solo blows up the solitary confinement of 2020 with a mix of unstoppable movements, incessant music, words and chants in infernal tempos and rhythms. The Dancing Public is a dance party, a spoken word concert and an expression of physical madness to the point of exhaustion. What is this extreme need for movement that we feel in our bodies today? Are we ready to taste life to the full again?

In their latest creation, Brasil-based choreographers Marcela Levi and Lucía Russo explore the various possibilities offered by the tremolo, a vibration effect between two different notes. By means of Kraftwerk’s and Bruno Tucunduva Ruviaro’s electronic music, tap-dancing, and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, six dancers produce a minutely detailed choreographic research around vibration in the body.

Tafukt is a dance solo created by Radouan Mriziga, and the first part in a trilogy focusing on the semantics and mythologies of the Imazighen, the indigenous people of North Africa. Each part centres on one female figure – embodied by one female dancer – who is a guardian of the transmission of Amazigh knowledge. In this part, it is the goddess Athena.

Every age has its wonders of the world: the impossible that people still manage to build – bigger and more impressive than anything we’d seen before. But how remarkable is the small body that invents and creates all these colossuses? In 7, Radouan Mriziga juxtaposes two benchmarks: the built environment, made to impress, and the ultimate wonder of the world: the human body itself.

Across the span of a decade and a half, Boyzie Cekwana and Danya Hammoud have kept a nodding acknowledgement of each other’s trajectories and strategies for survival. Now they come together so they can stand, one next to the other, one on top of the other, turning, bending and entangling around each other. 'We come together so we can both reach down to the top of our boots and take out our bootlegged goods, our smuggled stories.'

The dancers are often not more than shadows in a landscape of blow-up sculptures, cello-noise, and a robotic drum.

Dance and choreography leaves traces on your body, and they are often physical and concrete: growing muscles or the trauma of injuries. But the repetition and memory of movements also leave traces. The choreographies of the past continue to dwell in the dancer’s body. In the solo Body of Work, Daniel Linehan explores these traces in his own body.

In five speculative acts about the past from the future, the present is inevitably reflected upon. This way, choreography becomes a form of science-fiction.

French choreographer and philosopher Noé Soulier is convinced that watching dance is just as creative as dancing itself. Soulier explores the intersection of extremely precise dance writing and pure improvisation!

The vocal ensemble HYOID and artist-in-residence at Kaaitheater Benjamin Vandewalle are adapting Indianerlieder (1972) by Karlheinz Stockhausen, an iconic but rarely performed work. They are creating a gesamtkunstwerk that aims to reveal the vitality and timelessness of Stockhausen’s music. They are abandoning the original scenography in order to place the audience at the very centre of the three-dimensional ritual.
