The internet is a source of inspiration for Barbara Matijević & Giuseppe Chico. In I am 1984, internet facts for the year 1984 were combined with Matijević’s autobiography. Tracks was based entirely on sound found on the internet. In Forecasting, choreographed by Matijević with her computer, theatre and YouTube merged seamlessly. YouTube is also the subject of their next performance. This amateur video channel has a tsunami effect on the global production of images and is probably so popular because of our age-old need to tell our story, and to do it ourselves.
This time there is no montage of YouTube videos, but the performer herself who transforms the stage into an intimate room where she records her videos. As she interacts with a range of devices inspired by machines, gadgets and toys commonly used by DIY filmmakers, the performance establishes close parallels between amateur and artistic practices.
• Kaaitheater has been co-producing and staging the work of Barbara Matijević & Giuseppe Chico since 2009. Forecasting was also presented at the Avignon Festival and the Festival d'Automne in Paris, among other places. In their clever and playful performances they always live it up with the architecture of our thinking.
