Burning Ice

Burning Ice
In the light of Copenhagen

A new United Nations climate conference will be taking place in Copenhagen in early December 2009. Its aim is to come up with a Copenhagen Protocol that will replace that of Kyoto. It would be no exaggeration to say the Copenhagen conference will be of historic significance even before it has taken place. After all, a good and wide-ranging protocol is essential if there is to be any chance of taking vigorous action against climate change. And there’s not much time to lose. The latest data all point to the accelerated warming of the planet.

Just before the UN conference, the Kaaitheater is holding the second Burning Ice encounter. We are once again inviting artists, philosophers, sociologists and politicians to formulate challenges for art in the light of the Copenhagen conference.

Climate change has become a hot topic in recent years. Changes in communications regarding global warming inspired Stijn Demeulenaere to create a sound installation entitled Smalltalk.

23/11/2009 ... 28/11/2009
In Burning Ice #1, the Paris photographers’ collective Argos presented their work on climate refugees. Today they will be presenting nine photo-collages compiled around nine locations on our planet where the effects of climate change are already clearly visible: Pankhali/Bangladesh, Funafuti/Tuvalu, Blarigui/Lake Chad, New Orleans/USA, Shishmaref/USA, Khumbu Valley/Nepal, Hallingen/Germany, the Maldive Islands, Longbaoshan/China.

The world is in a wretched state, as we know. How can we change it? Peter Tom Jones and Vicky De Meyere – both guests in Burning Ice #1 last year – have published a book that focuses not on the problems, but the solutions. It’s a superb book that shows us how to change course. Terra Reversa offers appealing guidelines for a better society, whose main elements are comfortable living, justice, ecological sustainability and meaningful employment.

Permafrost is a sound sculpture based on the freezing of water. The crystallisation process becomes the source of the sound, and the material bursts out becomes visible and tangible. Aernoudt Jacobs (Brussels) is a sound artist. He studies sound in terms of material and perception and presents his findings in installations and concerts.

Global warming has resulted in a noticeable rise in sea levels. The Netherlands has vanished beneath the waters and all 16 million inhabitants are being taken in by the hospitable Hungarian people. A hilarious ‘mockumentary’ by the Dutch theatre group Space.

Today millions of people are fleeing from the consequences of global warming. Nevertheless, no start has yet been made on developing any international policy. This debate centres on the social and humanitarian components of climate change and allows prominent speakers to talk about what needs to be done.

How can we limit CO2 emissions? There are many varied opinions on how this can be done. For many years Aviel Verbruggen has been closely involved with climate and energy policy. For example, he questions the emissions trading scheme (ETS) as a policy instrument in counteracting global warming. In this lecture he presents his views on the choices that could and should be made in Copenhagen.

Mette Ingvartsen creates artificial landscapes that evaporate, dissolve and transform, using such ephemeral materials as light, sound, bubbles and foam. In Evaporated Landscapes, choreography no longer signifies the arrangement of physical movements in space, but the relationship between the ephemeral elements that magically flow and dissolve in space.

For each Time Festival in Ghent, two artists are invited to take on the task of curator. In 2009 (the very last edition of the festival) they are Els Dietvorst and Dirk Braeckman. They are making a clear statement on the basis of their concern for the state and future of the world: Time 2009 will be a book and not a festival. A place to think, not an event. A great many artists have worked on the book on the basis of their artistic practice.
