The Brussels canal zone: a must-go area

Brussels’ canal zone is slowly but surely coming back to life. Platform Kanal, an association intended to encourage this revival, was set up in 2008. The Kaaitheater is an active member.

Platform Kanal now moves onto the street with its new biennial Festival Kanal. Its aim is to creatively examine the problems, challenges and possibilities of the Brussels canal zone through art and cultural projects. The festival invites you to go walking (or cycling, sailing and so on) in the canal zone. It is a ‘must-go area’ brimming with artistic interventions that will sweep the public along.


The festival partners are Kaaitheater, La Raffinerie/Charleroi-Danses, Maison des Cultures et de la Cohésion Sociale / Huis van Culturen en Sociale Samenhang, ART2WORK/Bellevue Creative Brewery, Architecture Workroom Brussels, Demos, Cultuurbeleid Molenbeek, Met-X, Ecole de Cirque de Bruxelles, De Vaartkapoen, Globe Aroma, Het Beschrijf, Q-O2, Agentschap voor Territoriale Ontwikkeling/Agence de Développement Territorial.

In association with D'Broej, FoAM, OKNO, BON, La Compilothèque, Chiro Brussel, Foyer, Groep INTRO, JES, Chicago, MicroMarché, Laplan/De Markten, Animatiecentrum voor Talen/Centre d'Animation en Langues and others.

Away with the flat screen and the directed eye. The Bolscan enables you to look around in the filmed image, and you decide for yourself which image from the 360° sequences you view. Discover Brussels’ canal zone (or a part of it) by standing in the middle of it, while actually being in the Kaaitheater… Since 2003 CREW / Eric Joris have been exploring omnidirectional video and immersive technology.

The Design God audio walk asks you to take a new look at your own perceptions of the world. Do you believe what you see or see what you believe? Space relates fictional, personal stories about real social themes in the style of a documentary. The production has already been successfully performed in New York, Berlin and Amsterdam.

Art, science and activism intersect on this Triangular Walk. Three guides lead three groups of participants round three urban garden projects and through the surrounding streets. After the walk the various groups will meet up in the Open Green Rooftop Garden.
